Duke of Edinburgh Accredited Campsite

Wensleydale Camping at Aysgarth Falls within St Joseph's Wood is fully accredited by the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Schemes (North of England Regional Office) as a recommended campsite within the Yorkshire Dales / Pennines Expedition Area


Traditional Camp Cooking

With no tempting shops just around the corner you can be sure your Group enjoys the full benefits of self sufficient cooking. Let your Group gather fire wood, build an open fire and prepare a hot breakfast or dinner to keep them going through their expedition. Toasting marshmallows in the evening adds a finishing touch to the outdoor dining experience. A BBQ unit is also available if desired.

No 'Lights Out' Restrictions!

There are no 'lights-out' means you can enjoy the outdoor camping experience until whatever time you wish.

No Noise Restrictions!

St Joseph's Wood is perfectly located to be both accessible and private. Campers that enjoy a whole site to themselves are able to play music, sing and play evening games to your hearts content without any one hearing you.

No Pitch Restrictions!

There are a number of clearings within the 30 acre woodland in which we allow you to decide where you want to pitch your tents and any tenting accessories such as awnings or gazebos - and at no extra cost!

Access & Parking

St Josephs Wood benefits from private vehicular access by way of a track road suitable for motor vehicles. There is on-site parking available suitable for minibuses - ideal for collection or drop off.

Footpath Connections


The Campsite provides a highly accessible location only a few minutes walk from the main foot and bridle path route between Aysgarth and Redmire. Duke of Edinburgh on Horseback

St Joseph's Wood provides the perfect camp for Candidates completing their expedition on horse back. Horses can graze freely on the lush woodland grass.  Natural shelter surrounds the campsite under a thick tree canopy. 8 new 15x15ft stables are also available at the head of land with bedding and feed. If your horse happens to need some veterinary care there are two local veterinary practices at Askrigg and Leyburn offering a rural call out service.


Camp Waste


We would be happy to collect your waste at the end of your stay so no need to worry about disposal.

Woodland Wildlife

The woodland is full of native fauna and wildlife including rabbits, squirrels,  hedgehogs, doormice, owls, ducks, green woodpecker, moorhen and wild deer so keep your eyes peeled for them grazing under the trees!

The Campsite offers a cold water drinking tap and chemi-loo.

There are plenty of delightful local amenities for the Group Leaders to enjoy during their stay and all within a few minutes drive from the campsite

Group Leader Campsite


The main campsite is 0.5 acres. An additional campsite is available for Group Leaders who wish additional privacy or to provide their Candidates with the true independent camping experience. Both campsites are linked by a short tree-lined avenue.

Mobile Phone Network Coverage

All major networks provide a minimum 2G mobile phone signal at the campsite.

Familiarisation visits welcome throughout the year from Duke of Edinburgh Group Leaders or Volunteers.Please make contact using the details provided on the Contact Us page to arrange an appointment.

Opening Times

We welcome Duke of Edinburgh Award expeditions all year round and allow you to arrive or depart at any time of day.

All Uniform Supervised Groups and Activity Groups Welcome!

Our back to nature camping experience is suitable for everyone from couples to families with young or grown up children to large groups.

Our Campsite is very popular for themed parties, birthdays, sleep-overs, reunions and get-togethers, pre-wedding celebrations, Scouts, Girl Guides, Brownies, Duke of Edinburgh Award Expeditions, Air and Army Training Corps, Uniform Supervised Groups, and outdoor activity holidays, the list goes on!
